Why One Camera Isn't Enough Anymore

A front-facing dash cam answers one question: what happened ahead of you. That covers maybe 60% of the disputes people actually get into. The other 40% happens beside you, behind you, or inside your own car — a rideshare passenger who claims you were driving erratically, a rear-end collision where the other driver says you reversed into them, a hit-and-run from a parking lot where the damage is on your rear quarter panel.

The rear camera is the one with the highest return for most drivers. Rear-end collisions are the single most common claim type, and fault is usually decided by who was behind whom — which a rear camera settles instantly. Cabin cameras matter most if you drive for hire or carry passengers regularly.

Two-Channel vs Three-Channel: The Real Tradeoff

A 2-channel setup is front plus rear. A 3-channel adds cabin or a third angle. The hardware difference is one extra camera and one extra video stream the processor has to encode simultaneously.

Here's the part nobody tells you: on most 3-channel systems running at maximum resolution, the rear camera drops to 1080p and the cabin camera often drops to 720p. That's fine for identifying a driver or a license plate at close range, but you won't be reading plates at 50 feet off the cabin feed.

Wiring a Second Camera Without a Mess

If you want parking mode on the second camera too, both units need constant power. That means one hardwire kit rated for the total draw — usually around 5-7 watts combined. A single 12V socket adapter won't cut it because the socket loses power when the ignition turns off.

Storage Math: How Many Cards Do You Need?

Each camera stream generates its own files, and if you're running two separate systems you're doubling SD card wear. A 3-channel system recording 4K front plus 1080p rear plus 720p cabin at 30fps produces roughly 400-500 MB per minute combined. On a 128GB card with a 3-hour loop, you're overwriting footage every few days.

That's usually good enough — most collisions are captured and pulled within 24 hours. But if you want to preserve a trip or a long commute, plan on swapping to a 256GB card and specifically checking that the card is rated U3 / V30. Cheaper cards with the right capacity but slow write speeds are the number one cause of dropped frames in multi-camera systems, because you're now writing three streams instead of one.

Building the Setup

Start with the front and rear pair, get the wiring clean, and live with it for a week before adding a cabin camera.
