Most cars have an OBD-II port under the dash that nobody has touched since the last emissions test. It carries constant 12V, a solid ground, and it is reachable in two seconds without tools. For dash cam owners who want parking mode but do not want to pull fuses, that port is the shortcut worth understanding — along with its real limits.
An OBD-II connector exposes 16 pins, but only four matter for camera power:
An OBD hardwire adapter uses those pins and, on better units, watches CAN traffic to detect when the engine stops. That means no fuse taps, no multimeter, no trim removal. Plug it in, run one cable up the A-pillar, done in under fifteen minutes.

The convenience comes with a specific set of trade-offs that matter depending on the car:
Before buying, check three things: where your port physically sits, whether anything else is plugged into it, and whether the car is a hybrid or EV with an unusual wake schedule. If the port is in the footwell and you already have a telematics dongle, a fuse tap is the better answer even though it takes longer. If the port is behind a panel and free, the OBD adapter is hard to beat.
There is one more case worth naming: very old cars, pre-2008 or so. OBD-II was mandated in 1996, but pin 16 constant power behavior and CAN bus availability vary widely on older platforms. On a 2005 truck you may get power but no reliable ignition detection, which means the camera never leaves parking mode. Test with a multimeter before committing.
Whether the power comes from a fuse tap or an OBD adapter, parking mode still drains the battery, and the cutoff is still what protects you. If the adapter has adjustable settings, start at 12.2V. If it is fixed and the fixed value is 11.8V or lower, be cautious — that is deep enough into discharge territory that a weak or old battery may not crank after a long weekend of parking mode.
A useful test: leave the car parked overnight as you normally would, then check the app for parking clips and try starting the car. Do that for a week. If the car cranks normally every morning, the cutoff setting is working. If it starts getting lazy, raise the cutoff or shorten the parking mode timer.

One habit that applies to both: label the install. Write the cutoff voltage and the install date on a piece of tape inside the fuse box lid or on the adapter itself. Two years from now when you are debugging a battery drain, that note saves an afternoon.
