Insurers see more claims from parking lots than from highways. Tight spaces, distracted drivers backing out, and doors swinging open in slow motion — it's a low-speed version of bumper cars, except nobody admits fault. In the US, roughly 20% of all vehicle damage claims originate in parking lots, and a majority of those are hit-and-run. Someone clips your rear quarter panel while you're inside buying groceries, looks around, and drives off.
Without video, that claim becomes your word against an empty parking space. With video, it becomes a police report with a license plate attached. That's the whole reason a dash cam earns its keep in parking lots, and why setting it up properly matters more than the camera's spec sheet.
Parking mode keeps the camera alive after the ignition goes off. RedTiger's implementation uses the G-sensor (a built-in accelerometer) to wake the camera when something bumps the car, then records a short clip. Where you park changes what you can capture. Back into spaces when you can — it puts the front camera facing the aisle where traffic moves, and backing out later is safer anyway. Park at the end of a row where only one side neighbor exists. Avoid spots next to oversized trucks and vans, which block the lens and tend to have doors that swing hard.
If your car sits in the same lot every day — apartment complexes, long-term airport parking, office garages — the risk compounds. Coming back to a fresh scratch with a timestamped clip naming the car that did it is the entire value proposition.

Once you have the clip, don't sit on it. Pull the microSD card and copy the file to your phone or laptop the same day — factory-reset or reformat the card later and it's gone. Get the plate number, time, and surrounding vehicles from the clip, then file the police report. Most departments accept digital video via an online evidence portal or a USB drive at the front desk.
Then call your insurer. Provide the file, the incident report number, and the timestamp. Hit-and-run claims fall under uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage in most states, which typically has a much lower deductible than collision — sometimes zero. The video is what moves it out of the "unexplained damage" pile.
