Everyone mounts the rear camera at the top center of the rear window, because that's where the instructions put it. It works. It's also rarely the best spot in your specific car, and on some vehicles it's actively bad.
Here's why: a rear window camera shoots through glass that's steeply raked on a sedan, sloped almost flat on some hatchbacks, and covered in a heating grid element that shows up as faint lines in your footage. It also picks up every reflection of dashboard lights and headlights from behind. Positioning is worth ten minutes of thought before you drill into anything — or, better, before you peel the adhesive.
Before mounting, sit in the driver's seat and look at your rear glass. Then answer three questions.
SUVs and minivans have the easiest geometry here — tall, near-vertical glass with the wiper parking low. Sedans and small hatchbacks need the most adjustment.
A common confusion: people assume a dash cam's rear camera doubles as a backup camera. It does not, in the way you want.

Dash cam rear cameras can act as a live rearview display on some models, but they're mounted too high and angled too far down to judge bumper clearance against a wall. If you want parking assistance, you still need a proper backup camera or parking sensors. Don't buy a 2-channel dash cam expecting to replace one.
You have three realistic choices for the rear camera, and each has a real downside.
For most drivers, adhesive on the glass below the heating grid, offset away from the wiper's rest position, is the right answer.
Rear window footage looks worse than front footage in almost every setup, and it's rarely the camera's fault. Four causes, in order of how often they show up:
The rear camera cable is the longest run in the car. Two rules keep it working:
First, never route it in a straight, taut line. Cold weather shrinks the cable and hot weather expands it. Give it a gentle loop at the headliner entry and at the camera end. A taut cable in a -10F morning will pull its own connector loose, and you'll spend an hour troubleshooting before finding the actual cause.
Second, keep it away from the rear defroster's power lead if you can. Not for interference — for heat. The defroster wiring gets warm, and cheap camera cables running alongside it degrade over years.
Before you peel the backing off anything, do this: hold the camera in the intended position with the car parked, connect it, and record two minutes of daytime and two minutes of night footage. Play it back on a laptop, not the camera's 2-inch screen. Look specifically at whether the wiper arm is in frame, whether the defroster grid shows up, and whether you can read a license plate on a car parked 20 feet behind you.
If any of those fail, move the camera and test again. Rear camera quality is 90% placement and 10% hardware.
